Steven’s main area of practice is intellectual property enforcement and litigation with special interest in media and telecommunications.
Steven worked with one of the largest and oldest firms in Malaysia from 2006 until 2012 before joining a boutique IP firm in Kuala Lumpur between 2012 to 2015. Thereafter, he was with one of South East Asia’s largest legal networks until 2024, specialising in both litigious and non-litigious intellectual property matters.
Steven has represented clients in relation to disputes relating to patents, copyright, privacy and trade secrets, trademark, industrial designs, advertising and domain names, as well as various aspects of the enforcement of intellectual property rights. Over the years, he has also represented many multinationals in litigation and intellectual property enforcement matters, and has vast experience dealing with the Malaysian Intellectual Property Office, including attending to hearings and opposition proceedings.
Steven is also very experienced in non-litigious IP work such as advisory work, trademark/patent prosecution and registration work, drafting and reviewing of various IP and IT related agreements.
Steven is also fluent in written and spoken Chinese, and has vast experience dealing with China based clients, assisting and advising them on various matters including investment agreements, regulatory compliance, drafting and reviewing of commercial agreements, as well as linking local clients who are interested in investing in China with local legal experts for their legal needs and requirements.
Steven is also experienced in general corporate advisory work and has vast experience in advising, reviewing and drafting of commercial agreements including licensing agreements, franchise agreements amongst others.

- Acted for a well-known Egyptian fast-food chain in successfully defending trademark cancellation actions against its registered marks in Malaysia, and at the same time successfully cancelling the opponent’s Malaysian trademark registrations (both for trial and on appeal).
- Advised global Music Publishing companies relating to various matters involving enforcement of rights of its licensees in Malaysia.
- Acted for a well known Muslim fashion brand in a patent infringement suit in Malaysia.
- Acted for a world leading mobile game producer in enforcement action against a restaurant in Penang.
- Acted for one of China’s largest tea producer in negotiating settlement of a trade mark dispute.
- Acted for a leading Japanese contact lenses manufacturer in negotiating co-existence / settlement and licensing arrangements in Malaysia and Thailand.
- Drafted terms and conditions and privacy policies of use for major online websites and mobile applications.
- Acted for local companies defending a suit for breach of confidence, breach of fiduciary duty etc (trial and appeal).
- Acted for a Chinese security scanner producers in defending a patent infringement suit in Malaysia (trial and appeal).
- Advised an international music publishing company on a retainer basis on various IP issues.
- Advised a major Chinese internet online content creator in enforcement of its copyrights in Malaysia, including taking down illegal websites streaming contents without authority.
- Acted for a local leading car windshield repair shop in settling a trademark dispute.
- Reviewed and drafted license agreements, non-disclosure agreements, franchise agreements etc for various companies and entities.
- Filed and prosecuted trademark applications for various brand owners both local and foreign.
- Advised content creators on protection of their IP and image rights and negotiating agreements on their behalf.
- Acted for a manufacturer of waste water treatment machine in a copyright infringement action against ex-employees who misappropriated company trade secrets and set up a competing business.
- Acted for various clients on food regulatory practices, food labelling and importation.
- Acted for one of India’s leading food chain restaurant in a trademark cancellation action.
- Acted for a famous furniture brand in negotiating co-exitances agreement.
- Advised Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) on geographical indication of a type of long grain rice product.
- Advised a local E-sports startup on its terms of use, competition rules and guides and other legal matters.
- Advised local leading restaurant franchise in action against ex-owner for passing off and trademark infringement.
- Advised a Swiss pharmaceutical company on compliance with the Access to Biological Resources and Benefit Sharing Act 2017.
- Advised various companies on issues relating to the Personal Data Protection Act, including drafting and reviewing of privacy notice.
- Drafted of various agreements including NDAs, technology transfer agreements, IP licensing agreements, franchise agreements, etc.
